Working with the nisenan
to achieve federal recognition
Education
We are collaborating with CHIRP to create an educational flier about Nisenan culture and history in order to share knowledge with and bring awareness to the public.
|
Legislation
We are educating ourselves as a group on the history of the Nisenan’s legislative’s efforts to date to inform our ongoing support. We plan to advocate local government officials to recognize the Nisenan as the local tribe in Nevada County.
|
Reconciliation
FoNC envisions a future where the local community acknowledges its full history prior to the Gold Rush as well as the impacts that era had on the native people and the landscape. We believe we cannot make strides for the future until we deeply understand and acknowledge the past.

Community Partners
ChirpCalifornia Heritage Indigenous Research Project (or CHIRP) "was created to research, document, preserve, and protect California Indigenous Nisenan culture... CHIRP continues to support the Nisenan in their quest to re-establish themselves as the Indigenous people in the foothills where their families have resided for thousands of years."

Nevada city rancheriaFrom NevadaCityRancheria.org:
"As Nevada County's historic Tribe, the Nisenan witnessed the onset of the Gold Rush, the statehood of California and the creation of Nevada County. The Tribe is proud to share its pre and post contact history with its community located in the Sierra foothills of Northern California." |
